The tutorial uses master pages so that you can have elements repeat on every page in the same place, you will also create a second master page that can have elements that differ from the original.<br \/>\n<!--more-->1. <strong>Create a new document<\/strong> in the standard 8.5&#8243; x 11&#8243; page size (you may see it displayed as <strong>51p0 x 66p0<\/strong> which translates into 8.5&#8243; x 11&#8243;) Make the number of pages 12 and make sure facing pages is checked. Change the Margins to<strong> 6p0<\/strong> (1&#8243;) on all four sides and make 4 columns with a <strong>1p6<\/strong> (1\/4&#8243;) gutter (the space between the columns) Click Create.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2199\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP01.jpg 479w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP01-166x300.jpg 166w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><br \/>\n2. In the pages panel (if not visible go to the WINDOW menu &gt; PAGES) and <strong>double-click on the A-Master<\/strong> page thumbnails.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2218 \" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP02-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"308\" height=\"707\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP02-1.jpg 387w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP02-1-131x300.jpg 131w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 308px) 100vw, 308px\" \/><br \/>\nThis is the area where you make additions to your layout that will appear on every page. With the text tool, click on the rectangle to <strong>activate it as a text frame.<\/strong> Change the font to a typeface of your choice (I used Montserrat Bold) and change the size to<strong> 24pts.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-2202\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP04-292x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"292\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP04-292x300.jpg 292w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP04.jpg 363w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 292px) 100vw, 292px\" \/><br \/>\nGo to the TYPE menu &gt; INSERT SPECIAL CHARACTERS &gt; MARKERS &gt; Current Page Number, InDesign will place a letter corresponding to the Master Page you are on. Change the paragraph orientation to <strong>Align Right.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2203 \" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"365\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP05.jpg 518w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP05-247x300.jpg 247w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 365px) 100vw, 365px\" \/><br \/>\n4. Go to the OBJECT menu &gt; TEXT FRAME OPTIONS and <strong>change the text inset to 3p0<\/strong> (1\/2&#8243;) and the vertical alignment to the <strong>bottom<\/strong>. Select the text frame and hold\/opt key down and <strong>drag a copy onto the left-hand page.<\/strong> Highlight the text and change the paragraph orientation to <strong>Left Aligned<\/strong> and the color to\u00a0<strong>Paper<\/strong>\u00a0(white.) Change the number of rows to 3 with a gutter of 1p6 (1\/4&#8243;) and fit the guides to the margins.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2206 \" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP08.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"389\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP08.jpg 710w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP08-300x178.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 389px) 100vw, 389px\" \/><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2207\" style=\"width: 295px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2207\" class=\"wp-image-2207 \" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP09.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"285\" height=\"693\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP09.jpg 363w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP09-123x300.jpg 123w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 285px) 100vw, 285px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-2207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Layout with A-Master applied to all pages<\/p><\/div>\n<p>If you click through the pages in your layout you will now see a black page is on the left and white page is on the right on every spread. The page numbering automatically changes with each page.<\/p>\n<p>7. Go back to the Master Page area and <strong>click on <em>A-Master<\/em><\/strong> &#8211; this will highlight both pages. Then from the Pages Panel menu click on <strong>Duplicate Master Page <em>&#8220;A-Master&#8221;<\/em><\/strong> This makes a copy of the master page designated with the letter B.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2208 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"896\" height=\"338\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP10.jpg 896w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP10-300x113.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP10-768x290.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><br \/>\n8. Open the Swatches Panel (WINDOW menu &gt; SWATCHES) in the<em> B-Master<\/em> page, <strong>change the background color<\/strong> for the left and right-hand to <strong>Red<\/strong>. Then change the fill color of the page number on the right-hand page to <strong>Paper<\/strong> (white.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2209 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1271\" height=\"820\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP11.jpg 1271w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP11-300x194.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP11-768x495.jpg 768w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP11-1024x661.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1271px) 100vw, 1271px\" \/><br \/>\n9.<strong> Drag the <em>B-Master<\/em> page to page 6 and 7<\/strong> &#8211; these pages will now get updated with the red background color and the page numbering will stay intact.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2211 \" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"378\" height=\"496\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP13.jpg 535w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP13-229x300.jpg 229w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 378px) 100vw, 378px\" \/><br \/>\n10. Drag the <em>B-Master<\/em> page to the<strong> first page<\/strong> and to the <strong>last page<\/strong>\u00a0(page 12).<br \/>\n11. To<strong> remove page numbering<\/strong> from the cover and back cover, select the page in the Pages Panel and go to the Pages Panel menu and click on <strong>Override All Master Page Items.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2212 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"896\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP14.jpg 896w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP14-300x121.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP14-768x309.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 896px) 100vw, 896px\" \/><br \/>\nThis disconnects the page from the master and allows you to change all aspects of the text frame. With the type tool <strong>edit the page number<\/strong> to say something like <em>COVER<\/em>, change the height of the text (I used 96pts), the alignment (in my example I changed it to center) and the vertical alignment in the Text Frame Options window to Center. You could change the color of the frame or place in a photo if you chose.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2213 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP15.jpg 700w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/MP15-300x188.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><br \/>\nEdit the back cover to remove the text and, change the fill etc..<\/p>\n<p>You now have a simple multi-page document with a modular grid. Go tot he FILE menu &gt; EXPORT and choose Adobe PDF (Print) as the Save As Type. Choose all pages and Export it as Spreads (meaning the PDF will show a left and right-hand page.)
