(I can&#8217;t take full credit for designing this technique, but the original website disappeared and I wanted to preserve it for posterity.)<br \/>\n<!--more-->1. Create a<strong> new document<\/strong> in Photoshop <strong>1000<\/strong> pixels wide by <strong>500<\/strong> pixels high by <strong>72<\/strong> pixels per inch (for this effect to work well, it needs to start off as low res.) You can change the dimensions of the new canvas based on your needs. Make sure the background is set to <strong>White<\/strong>.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2161\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"363\" height=\"644\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST01.jpg 443w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST01-169x300.jpg 169w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 363px) 100vw, 363px\" \/><br \/>\n2. Type D on the keyboard &#8211; this sets the foreground color to Black and the background to White. <strong>Select a bold typeface<\/strong> &#8211; or one that does not have too many thin elements. For my example, I&#8217;m using <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dafont.com\/bebas-neue.font\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Bebas Neue Bold<\/a>. With the type tool, type a word or phrase, for my example I&#8217;m using STAMPED TEXT using <strong>180pt<\/strong> height and <strong>50pts<\/strong> for the Tracking (yours may be different depending on the word or phrase you use.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2162\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"933\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST02.jpg 933w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST02-300x137.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST02-768x350.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 933px) 100vw, 933px\" \/><br \/>\n3. <strong>Merge the text layer with the background<\/strong> by going to the LAYER menu &gt; FLATTEN IMAGE (the will make the text uneditable, so make sure everything is set AND spelled correctly.)<br \/>\n4. <strong>Invert the image<\/strong> by going to the IMAGE menu &gt; ADJUSTMENTS &gt; INVERT (Cmd\/Ctrl + I)<br \/>\n5. Select the <strong>Magic Wand tool<\/strong> and choose the option to have the selection be <strong>non-contiguous<\/strong> and select the white of the text.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2163\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"288\" height=\"56\" \/><br \/>\n6. Go to the FILTER menu &gt; OTHER &gt; HIGH PASS and set it to 10.0 pixels. <strong>High Pass<\/strong> is a filter that detects sudden changes between pixel&#8217;s brightness or color and then exaggerates them. So bright parts are brighter and dark one are darker. Apply the filter a second time.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2166\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"305\" height=\"328\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST04.jpg 476w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST04-279x300.jpg 279w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 305px) 100vw, 305px\" \/><br \/>\n7. Go to the FILTER menu &gt; NOISE &gt; ADD NOISE and add <strong>15% Gaussian noise<\/strong>, make sure to check the <strong>Monochromatic<\/strong> box to keep the noise black and white.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2167\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"304\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST05.jpg 476w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST05-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 304px) 100vw, 304px\" \/><br \/>\n<strong>Deselect the selection<\/strong> &#8211; SELECT menu &gt; DESELECT (or Cmd\/Ctrl + D)<br \/>\n8. Go to the IMAGE menu &gt; IMAGE SIZE and change the resolution to <strong>150 Pixels\/Inch<\/strong> make sure <strong>Resample<\/strong> is checked so that you can add pixels to the image. Click OK<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2168\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"948\" height=\"542\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST06.jpg 948w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST06-300x172.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST06-768x439.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 948px) 100vw, 948px\" \/><br \/>\n9. Go to the FILTER menu &gt; STYLIZE &gt; DIFFUSE and leave the setting to <strong>Normal<\/strong> &#8211; this will introduce some noise into the edges of the text. Go to the IMAGE menu &gt; IMAGE SIZE and change the resolution to <strong>300 Pixels\/Inch<\/strong> make sure <strong>Resample<\/strong> is checked so that you can add pixels to the image. Go to the IMAGE menu &gt; ADJUSTMENTS &gt; BRIGHTNESS\/CONTRAST and set both <strong>Brightness and Contrast<\/strong> to <strong>50<\/strong>. Click OK.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2172\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"325\" height=\"198\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST10.jpg 480w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST10-300x183.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 325px) 100vw, 325px\" \/><br \/>\n13. Go to the IMAGE menu &gt; ADJUSTMENTS &gt; THRESHOLD and change the level to anywhere between <strong>80 and 180<\/strong> depending on how much noise you want to retain in the middle of the text (lower numbers will have less noise.) This makes the image pure black and white with no other levels of gray. Invert the image by going to the IMAGE menu &gt; ADJUSTMENTS &gt; INVERT (Cmd\/Ctrl + I.) Save your file as a PSD, TIF or JPG.<br \/>\n<strong>OPTIONAL STEPS<\/strong><br \/>\n15. To add a little more realism to the stamped text, <strong>select individual letters<\/strong> with the Rectangular Marquee tool and then select the Move tool and use the arrow keys to move each letter a click or two in different directions.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2175\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST13.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1209\" height=\"276\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST13.jpg 1209w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST13-300x68.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST13-768x175.jpg 768w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ST13-1024x234.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1209px) 100vw, 1209px\" \/><br \/>\n16. If you save this in a Bitmap format (a format that only supports black and white &#8211; black is turned ON and white is OFF) then you can easily change the color of the text if it is placed in Illustrator.
