It&#8217;s not as good as the real thing but built into the tutorial are plenty of opportunities to modify the technique to achieve a certain level of authenticity.<br \/>\n<!--more-->1. <a href=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/torn-edges-base-image.jpg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Download this image\u00a0<\/a>or use one of your own. <strong>Pro-Tip<\/strong> if you are looking online for an image to use you want to use the highest res image possible. In <strong>Google Images<\/strong> when you search click on <strong>Tools<\/strong> and then click on the <strong>Size<\/strong> drop down and select larger than 4 MP this will yield very high-resolution results.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2127\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE01.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1008\" height=\"438\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE01.jpg 1008w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE01-300x130.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE01-768x334.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1008px) 100vw, 1008px\" \/><br \/>\nThis tutorial assumes you are using high-res images; if you are using something lower-res you will need to adjust the settings in all of the steps.<br \/>\n2. The first step is to make a selection that mimics how you would tear the image &#8211; typically this means you would attempt to make straight tears. <strong>Select the Polygon lasso tool<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2156\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE-plasso.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"313\" height=\"77\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE-plasso.jpg 313w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE-plasso-300x74.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 313px) 100vw, 313px\" \/><br \/>\nand make a very general selection around the image. In reality, trying to tear out an image would not yield neat corners, in the next step we&#8217;ll <strong>soften up the selection.<\/strong> Go to the SELECT menu &gt; MODIFY &gt; SMOOTH and smooth the selection with a 24-pixel radius (depending on the size of the image you can increase or decrease the radius to make it look right.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2129\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE03.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"800\" height=\"326\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE03.jpg 800w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE03-300x122.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE03-768x313.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><br \/>\n4. Open the Channels panel (if you can&#8217;t find it go to the WINDOW menu &gt; CHANNELS) and click on the <strong>Save Selection as a Channel Icon<\/strong>, rename it <em>interior edge.<\/em><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2130\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE04.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"405\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE04.jpg 385w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE04-285x300.jpg 285w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><br \/>\n5. With the selection still active go to the SELECT menu &gt; MODIFY &gt; EXPAND and <strong>expand the selection<\/strong> by 18 pixels (again, depending on the size of the image you can increase or decrease the radius to make it look right.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2131\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE05.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"426\" height=\"169\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE05.jpg 426w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE05-300x119.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 426px) 100vw, 426px\" \/><br \/>\n6. <strong>Save this as a new channel<\/strong> and call it <em>exterior edge<\/em> &#8211; this will be used to simulate the raggedy paper from the tear.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2132\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE06.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"385\" height=\"454\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE06.jpg 385w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE06-254x300.jpg 254w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 385px) 100vw, 385px\" \/><br \/>\n7. <strong>Deselect the selection<\/strong> by going to the SELECT menu &gt; DESELECT (or Cmd\/Ctrl + D)<br \/>\n8. Open the Layers Panel and <strong>make a copy of the background layer<\/strong> by either dragging the layer to the New Layer icon OR by typing Cmd\/Ctrl + J. <strong>Turn off the visibility for the original background layer<\/strong> and make <em>Background Copy<\/em> the active layer by clicking on it.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2133\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE07.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"398\" height=\"516\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE07.jpg 398w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE07-231x300.jpg 231w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 398px) 100vw, 398px\" \/><br \/>\n9. Go back to the SELECT menu &gt; LOAD SELECTION select the channel <em>exterior edge<\/em> and click on OK. Then, click on the <strong>Adjustment Layer<\/strong> Icon at the bottom of the layers panel<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2137\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE11.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"501\" height=\"603\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE11.jpg 501w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE11-249x300.jpg 249w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 501px) 100vw, 501px\" \/><br \/>\nand create a new <strong>Solid Color Adjustment Layer<\/strong> with a <strong>white fill.<\/strong><br \/>\nSlide the <em>Color Fill 1<\/em> layer below the <em>Background Copy Layer.<\/em><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2139\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE12.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"706\" height=\"678\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE12.jpg 706w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE12-300x288.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 706px) 100vw, 706px\" \/><br \/>\n11. Now to make things look all raggedy. <strong>Click on the Layer Mask<\/strong> for the <em>Background Copy Layer<\/em> and go to the FILTER menu &gt; FILTER GALLERY and click on the Brush Strokes Folder and the <strong>Spatter Filter.<\/strong> Spatter has two settings the <strong>spray radius<\/strong> which will make the edges raggedy and <strong>smoothness<\/strong> which will smooth out the raggedness. For this I&#8217;ve used <strong>11<\/strong> for the radius and <strong>7<\/strong> for the smoothness &#8211; you can make your own settings for this depending on what looks good to you.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2141\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1384\" height=\"932\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14.jpg 1384w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14-300x202.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14-768x517.jpg 768w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14-1024x690.jpg 1024w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1384px) 100vw, 1384px\" \/><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2142\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14a.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"933\" height=\"352\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14a.jpg 933w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14a-300x113.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE14a-768x290.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 933px) 100vw, 933px\" \/><br \/>\n12. <strong>Soften the Spatter filter<\/strong> effect &#8211; with the layer mask still active go to the FILTER menu &gt; BLUR &gt; GAUSSIAN BLUR and set it to <strong>2 pixels.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2143\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE15.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"697\" height=\"587\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE15.jpg 697w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE15-300x253.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 697px) 100vw, 697px\" \/><br \/>\nThen go to the IMAGE menu &gt; ADJUSTMENTS &gt; LEVELS and bring the black and white points in just a bit to <strong>make the blur effect not so soft.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2144\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE16.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"888\" height=\"626\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE16.jpg 888w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE16-300x211.jpg 300w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE16-768x541.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 888px) 100vw, 888px\" \/><br \/>\n13. We&#8217;ll work on the <em>Color Fill 1<\/em> layer by using similar techniques. Click on the<strong> layer mask for <em>Color Fill 1<\/em><\/strong> and go back to the FILTER menu &gt; FILTER GALLERY and click on the Brush Strokes Folder and the <strong>Spatter Filter<\/strong>. Use similar settings as the last time but not exactly the same &#8211; this will provide a better sense of authenticity if both edges are not uniform. For my example, I used <strong>18<\/strong> for the Spray Radius and <strong>12<\/strong> for the Smoothness.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2145\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE17.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"416\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE17.jpg 416w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE17-294x300.jpg 294w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 416px) 100vw, 416px\" \/><br \/>\n14. Next, hold the Cmd\/Ctrl key down and click on the <em>Color Fill 1<\/em> layer mask &#8211; this activates the mask as a selection &#8211; we will do this so that the next effect, <strong>add noise<\/strong>, will be limited to the just the white area of the mask. With the selection activated,\u00a0go to the FILTER menu &gt; NOISE &gt; ADD NOISE and make the amount <strong>12%<\/strong> and the distribution <strong>Gaussian<\/strong>. This will provide a slight texture to the ripped edges of the paper. <strong>Deselect the selection.<\/strong><br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2146\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE18.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"366\" height=\"527\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE18.jpg 476w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE18-208x300.jpg 208w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 366px) 100vw, 366px\" \/><br \/>\n15. Go to the FILTER menu &gt; BLUR &gt; GAUSSIAN BLUR and set it to <strong>2 pixels.<\/strong> Then Go to the IMAGE menu &gt; ADJUSTMENTS &gt; LEVELS and bring the black and white points in just a bit to\u00a0<strong>make the blur effect not so soft.<\/strong><br \/>\n16. The final adjustments are made as <strong>transformations to the layer masks.<\/strong> With the layer mask for <em>Color Fill 1<\/em> still active, go to the EDIT menu &gt; FREE TRANSFORM. With the transformation bounding box open, you can <strong>scale, rotate and move<\/strong> the exterior edge of the tear to give it even more of an authentic appearance.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2151\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE19.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"347\" height=\"778\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE19.jpg 347w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE19-134x300.jpg 134w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 347px) 100vw, 347px\" \/><br \/>\n17. You can adjust the shape of the interior edge by doing the same thing &#8211; click on the Background Copy layer mask and <strong>uncheck the chain link icon<\/strong> between the layer and mask (this allows you to manipulate just the mask and not the image.)<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2153\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1TE20-1.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"425\" height=\"160\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1TE20-1.jpg 425w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/1TE20-1-300x113.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 425px) 100vw, 425px\" \/><br \/>\nUse the EDIT menu &gt; TRANSFORM &gt; WARP feature to manipulate the overall shape.<br \/>\n<img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-2152\" src=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE20.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"355\" height=\"758\" srcset=\"http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE20.jpg 355w, http:\/\/nickcassway.com\/designblog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/TE20-141x300.jpg 141w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 355px) 100vw, 355px\" \/><br \/>\n18.
