Portraits of Inmates in the Death Row Population Sentenced as Juveniles


This installation was commissioned by Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia and was on display from 2002 through 2005.

The piece centers on the theme of death row inmates that were sentenced as juveniles, an issue the supreme court in October of 2002 refused to review. {In March 2005, the United States Supreme Court ruled that the death penalty for those who had committed their crimes at under 18 years of age was cruel and unusual punishment and hence barred by the Constitution.) Who Died


Who Died utilized the effects of retinal afterimages as a motif to examine our relationships with the deaths of celebrities and news figures. (Retinal afterimages are the persistent images that are temporarily stamped onto the retina after being exposed to bright lights or highly contrasting stimuli.) This installation utilized high contrast white-on-black drawn portraiture of  deceased celebrities and news figures
in 2004 as the stimulus for creating retinal afterimages.
